Beamzag

About Beamzag

Beamzag is a free daily logic puzzle that I make in Cambridge, Ontario. A new board appears at midnight in your time zone. Monday's should take a couple of minutes, and Saturday's is meant to keep a good player busy for twenty minutes or more.

How to play

  1. A laser enters the board from one edge. A socket waits on another edge.
  2. Tap an empty cell to place a mirror. Tap again to flip it (/ becomes \). Tap once more to remove it.
  3. Mirrors turn the beam 90°, and both sides reflect. Gems light up as the beam passes through them, and walls stop it.
  4. You get an exact number of mirrors. Use all of them so the beam lights every gem and lands in the socket.

The how to play page goes through a small board step by step.

Why there is only one answer

A generator builds each board, then a separate solver tries every possible way to place the mirrors. I only publish a board when the solver shows that nothing with fewer mirrors works and exactly one arrangement with the given number does. So if your mirrors light every gem and reach the socket, you have found the answer, the same one everyone else found.

The boards are generated more than a year ahead, and a second, slower checker runs over every file before upload. That is why a new day needs no server: the page just loads that date's file.

The week

DayBoardMirrorsLevel
Monday5×53Gentle
Tuesday6×64Easy
Wednesday6×65Medium
Thursday7×75Medium
Friday7×76Hard
Saturday9×97Expert

Sunday is Twin day. There are two lasers and two sockets, and both beams draw from one pile of mirrors. Either beam can light any gem, but each has to end in its own socket. The beams can cross, and a mirror reflects both of them.

Hints and streaks

You get two hints per puzzle. A hint places one correct mirror and locks it, and your share card marks the point in your solve where you used it.

Your streak is the number of days in a row you have solved that day's puzzle. The past boards page lists every earlier board, and anyone can replay the last seven days. Practice mode draws from 300 separate boards, 100 at each difficulty, and gives everyone three a day. Wins from either show up under extra solves in your stats but do not extend your streak.

The share card has one square per tap, coloured by how many gems were lit at that moment. It shows how your search went without giving away where the mirrors go. Stats and streaks live only in your browser, and the privacy page lists exactly what is stored.

Who makes this

I'm an indie game developer, and I build Beamzag by myself alongside a game I'm finishing for Steam. The boards come from a deterministic generator and an exhaustive solver, which is how I can promise every one has exactly one answer. Beamzag does not track you. The only numbers I get are page-view totals from Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and keeps no IP address.

If you want to chip in, the Supporter pack costs C$4 once and opens the older boards and unlimited practice. The daily board, streaks and stats stay free either way.
